ABOUT ABOUT

The NSS concludes our season collaborating with pianist Bob Boguslaw to present Paul Hindemith's "Four Temperaments". This composition was commissioned as a ballet by the renowned choreographer George Balanchine and has great significance in the history of ballet as one of the earliest works without a plot which paved the way for subsequent abstract ballets. The concept behind this work is the philosophy of the four temperaments of ancient times which categorized human beings into four character types: melancholic, sanguine, phlegmatic and choleric.

In addition to Hindemith, the orchestra will also perform string music compositions written between 1944-1994 by several underrepresented composers.  The entire program is as follows:

  • David DIAMOND:  Rounds (1944)
  • Keith JARRETT:  Elegy (1994)
  • Leroy ANDERSON:  Arietta (1962)
  • Nancy Bloomer DEUSSEN:  Peninsula Suite (1994)
