ABOUT ABOUT

The NSS is excited to kick off our third season with Vivaldi's famous Guitar Concerto, featuring Candice Mowbray. Candice has been a featured artist for a variety of festivals and concerts series including the Guitar Foundation of American Convention in Los Angeles, Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Series, Bethlehem Guitar Festival, Austin Peay GuitarFest and Ibero-American Guitar Festival at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian.  She was profiled in Classical Guitar Magazine’s "Letter from New York" and featured in Maryland Public Television's documentary, "Our Town.”

In addition to the Vivaldi, we will present one of the best-known works of string orchestra literature: Grieg's Holberg Suite was written originally in 1884 as a solo piano opus, then orchestrated by Grieg a year later into its more famous string orchestra version. It will be joined by Mendelssohn's String Sinfonia No. 9. One of 13 such works he composed between the ages of 12 and 14 (did you catch those ages?), this captivating piece highlights Mendelssohn's precocious abilities and demonstrates his ability even as a very young composer to expand on the creations of his predecessors, particularly Haydn.

The concert will be rounded out by two lesser-known works: Beth Anderson's Kentucky Swale and Percy Fletcher's Folk Song and Fiddle Dance. Both pieces feature impressions of traditional fiddle music and should be an enchanting discovery for listeners.
